Female Fridays: Ari Melenciano
Welcome to our new segment which we’ve called Female Fridays! We had great responses to our WCW segment on Instagram and thought why not bring it over to our blog?
This way, we can go into greater detail about amazing, inspirational women. We’d love for you all to drop in the comments some suggestions for future posts, let us know which ladies you consider to be leaders. We are a female-led brand, which means it is so important for us to uplift and give flowers when they’re due.
Now let’s get started with our first feature, Ari Melenciano!
Ari is a designer, researcher and creative technologist based in Brooklyn, New York, who’s passionate about exploring the complex relationships between forms of design and sentient experiences. She’s also a professor at NYU and the founder of Afrotectopia, an institution dedicated to using a Black and Afrocentric lens to create new media art, science, technology and design. Her work has earned her praise and support from the likes of The New York Times and Sundance.
What’s something special she’s working on?
Soundscapes. Ecologies. Planetary Topographies.
If those three terms mean something to you, congrats. If they don’t, prepare to have your mind blown.
Ari calls it the Electrocology of Sound Travel. We call it genius. Her work covers 5 major cities: Accra, Tokyo, New York, Mexico City and Sao Paulo.
We can’t do it justice with our words so check it out for yourself here - http://electrocology.glitch.me
